Pump Up The Jam – Positive Effects of Music on Exercise

By Maire,

The secret to scoring your best body ever is hiding in something you already carry around all day: your phone. “Workout music can increase endurance by at least 15 percent,” says Jacque Crockford, Exercise Physiologist/Education Specialist at ACE. With the Fit Radio app, you can enjoy hundreds of mixes from a variety of genres and stations curated specifically for you by professional DJs. Our motto has always been the same: Why spend time making playlists yourself when you can spend time sweating? Here are the top five reasons a killer curated workout playlist can change your workout forever:

1. Workout Music Helps You Keep Your Pace

For maximum benefit, your desired speed/heart rate should match up with each song’s beats per minute, or BPM. According to the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. “Synchronized music tends to drive exercise intensity.” Using your Fit Radio app, you have the ability to choose your workout music based on your desired BPM, or even your type of workout, and Fit Radio will deliver fresh new mixes that match your desired heart rate. Plus, through the new Running tab, Fit Radio will automatically detect your pace when you start running. From there, Fit Radio will take care of the rest and deliver the perfect running playlist that matches each footfall of your stride.

Music for your workout

2. Workout Music Increases Your Endurance

Remember those times you spent hours on the dance floor or jamming out all night at your favorite concert? You didn’t even notice because you got lost in the music! Music is proven to increase endurance because it serves as a (positive) distraction. When you turn on your Fit Radio app, our professionally engineered mixes are designed to not only keep you moving and motivated through your entire workout, but also having fun and getting lost in the beats. Your best workout always happens when it doesn’t seem like a workout.

3. Workout Music Keeps You Focused

Everyone has that go-to song that always pumps them up no matter what. Believe it or not, there’s science as to why that happens. When you can associate songs with certain memories or tap into the emotions of the lyrics, it boosts the motivational power of a song. Each mix that is added to Fit Radio has been specially created by our professional Fit Radio DJs keeping the listeners in mind — thinking about what will help keep them motivated, excited, and wanting more.

4. Music Can Elevate Your Mood

To music lovers, this comes as no surprise, but scientists have recently found that people can boost their mood by simply listening to upbeat music. Not to mention, recent studies have also found that randomness in music increases dopamine levels in your brain. Not only does the Fit Radio app house hundred of mixes from the genres and artists that you love, they’re engineered re-mixes designed to give you non-stop music while also surprising you at every turn so you never know what’s next. (Talk about a win-win!)

Enjoying Workout Music

5. Music Makes You Move

Researchers found that when music possesses “high-groove” qualities, the brain gets excited and induces movement in the listener. With your Fit Radio app, turn on any mix and it has the ability to make you move — no matter how much you’re dreading your workout.

Fit Radio DJ Spotlight: DJ Euphoria

By Maire,

This week, we had a chance to sit down with DJ Euphoria and ask him a couple questions. Here is what he had to say:

1. How would you best describe yourself in three words?

Honest , Friendly, and Ambitious.

2. What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?

It was picture day in middle school and my mom decided she was going to start cutting my hair herself. Let’s just say, I came out looking like I went to a blind barber. She still made me go to school wearing a hat, but little did she know hats weren’t allowed at school. (Like I told her!) I got called so many names that day and ended up getting my head shaved completely bald. We didn’t purchase the pictures that year. 😉

3. Who is or was your celebrity crush?

Shailene Woodley

4. If you could read minds, whose would you want to read?

DJ AM – his music selection and live mashups were unreal. A true legend.

5. What is the most important thing to you when you make a mix for Fit Radio?

I always put myself in the user’s shoes. I make sure that a listener would love to listen to the mix over and over and look forward to more.

Getting To Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJ's: Nacho Vega

By superadmin,

I got to chat with one of our most popular hip-hop DJ’s on Fit Radio, Nacho Vega! Nacho Vega got his start learning from some fellow DJ friends (he was only 14!) and since then has been creating awesome hip-hop and house mixes and spinning around the US! Read on to find out more about one of our favorite DJ’s, Nacho Vega…

 Where are you from?

I was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Grew Up in Orlando, Florida but I’ve lived in San Francisco, CA for the last 5 years.

Where is your favorite place to spin?
My favorite place to spin has to be at Temple SF where I do my residency.  Although I’ve played at some amazing places in the US and Canada, Temple SF feels the most like home away from my studio at home.

What made you get into music and DJing?
The reason I got into the DJ culture was two different friends of mine.  The first was Enrique Gonzalez aka Rick G of 3rd Wish whom at the time was called DJ Inferno and was one of Central Florida’s best Battle DJ’s.  Rick taught me how to DJ every night for two weeks and let me borrow my first crate of records.  I was 14 and he was 15.

Then I met Mark Villajandre aka Mark V. who taught me all about song selection and dance music when I was 16.  From there the journey has been one filled with many friends and good memories.

Favorite food?

Pernil con Arroz y Gandules  (I had to look this up, found out it was a delicious Puerto Rican dish made up of pork and yellow rice, yum!)

Favorite TV show/s?

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, Doctor Who, sports, and my guiltiest pleasure; Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Paris, France.  I’d love to take my wife Naomi there one day.

Do you have an idol? If so, who?

My idol and hero has to be my mom.  No matter what she finds the good and wants to help everybody. She has endless amounts of love and I love that about her.

Favorite genre and/or style of music?

House and Hip-Hop.  I grew up with both and both have been a part of every facet of my life.  So like a picture album, I have so many memories tied to Hip-Hop and House Music.

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?
My favorite thing about being a DJ has to be the improvisation playing records and the fact that every night is different. The crowd is different every night. Every place you play they have different moods as a dance floor, so you have to improvise and be creative to give the crowd a new and unique experience.

What is your favorite track at the moment (or favorite DJ/producer/artist is fine too) ?
Hands down favorite song right now is “G.O.O.D. Morning (Europe)” by 2 Chainz.  The record is dope and suits a veteran of the Dirty South that reinvented himself as a persona that has brought credibility to the hyper swagged out culture that is Trap Music, the next evolution of the Dirty South Genre.

What type of equipment do you use?
I use a Native Instruments Traktor S2 DJ Controller.  I switched to it one and half years ago from Serato Scratch Live and I have not looked back.  Best investment for DJ’s that want all in one portability for any gig and the comfort of using the same physical and virtual DJ interface.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Graduate college.  It took time, commitment, and money.  But overall, best investment of my life.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Funny.  Crunk.  Loyal.

Do you have any secret talents?
I’m a pretty awesome shadow puppeteer and Lego architect.

What do you do when you aren’t spinning?
I hang out with my wife Naomi, work as a Network Architect, exercise w/ Fit Radio at my local Stonestown San Fran YMCA and have a First Class ticket to the Jet Life on Flight 420.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself doing the exact same thing except with some little copies of Naomi and I running around to share in life with.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Mind reading.  I think Mind reading would be awesome for obvious reasons, but I also don’t know if I want that kind of super power. It might be like the Kanye joint “No One Man should have all that Power”.

What are your thoughts on FIT Radio?
Fit Radio is awesome. It is like having an on-demand catalog of some of the world’s best DJs right at your fingertips, literally. Fit Radio has also given me the opportunity to share music with all the Fit Radio members around the world.  Fit Radio is the premier music provider for fitness goers anywhere and everywhere.  It’s probably one of the best mobile apps EVER!

Getting To Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJs: ### (Pound Pound Pound)

By superadmin,

I got to have a chat with the DJ duo Pound Pound Pound (made up of Jeremy Rhodes and Josh Wren). Their close friendship and mutual love of music got them to where they are now, producing successful Dubstep and Electro House mixes and even throwing in a bit of Moombahton! Read on to discover more about one of our favorite DJ duos, Pound Pound Pound…

Where are you guys from?
West Lafayette, Indiana

Where is your favorite place to spin?
That’s hard to pick…. Maybe The Metro in Chicago or The Congress Theater

What made you guys get into music and DJing?
We both really had a passion for music. So we bought turntables off
craigslist, and things escalated to where we are at now.

Favorite candy?
Jeremy-gummy worms

Josh- beef jerky

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Somewhere in Europe definitely. Probably visit our buddies in England or the Netherlands

Do you have an idol? If so, who?
We wouldn’t say we have an idol,in particular, but when we first started getting into music was in 2008 when we saw so many shows that embraced the culture. It really inspired us to become a part of the movement.

Favorite genre and/or style of music?
We can’t have just one favorite genre. It would be too constricting like a turtleneck. Our taste in music is too broad to pick just one. But the main genres we’ve been hitting lately are Trap, Moombah, Electro and Dubstep.

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?
The reaction after you’re done and the energy surrounding the show. You can feel if the show was a good show and there’s no better feeling then knowing you made a bunch of peoples’ nights because of the bangers you were dropping.

What is your favorite track at the moment?
Either “Flex” by Heroes x Villians or the Jay Fay remix of “Ladies In The Back” by Star Slinger

What type of equipment do you use?
For live shows, 2 Pioneer 1000 mk3s and a Pioneer djm-800 mixer.
For production, we use Logic and Ableton.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
definitely music production. No matter how much you know or you think you know there’s always something to learn. But that’s what makes it so fun.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
pound pound pound

You guys have any secret talents?
FIFA… It’s our goals to become the best FIFA players out of all the producers out there haha

What do you do when you aren’t spinning?
Making original tunes, going to shows, FIFA, or taking care of LazerLou. He’s our mascot and on out EP cover…he’s our pet skunk.

Where do you guys see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully living on a coast somewhere doing music full time. Hopefully still touring.

Do you have a New Years resolution? If so, what?
I’d say just to keep progressing…. if you’re not moving forward, then you’re falling backwards in this industry.
Our main goal is to release 2 E.P.’s this year and do some major shows.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Jeremy: If I could just get really big. Go into a room full of people and just get huge and make them all feel super uncomfortable. lol
Josh: Telekinesis… that way I could sit on my couch and write music just with my mind along with other things.

What are your thoughts on FIT Radio?
We think it’s really awesome and we are thankful to be apart of it. Thank you for providing a way to find new music and for supporting ours!

G.U.R. aka The Great Urban Race

By superadmin,

So this past Saturday, Lexi and I had the privilege of promoting with the team organizing and coordinating The Great Urban Race, which is, if you don’t already know, a crazy fun scavenger hunt throughout Atlanta, or Chicago, or whichever city they are visiting that weekend. Think The Amazing Race television show but on a somewhat smaller scale 😉 Anyway, the race wasn’t without a clue sheet, themed teams with fun costumes and, what else, great music provided by yours truly! It was an awesome experience not only because of the stirring atmosphere surrounding all the runners but the people at Red Frog Events were so incredibly helpful and kind. Cynthia, Catherine, Tyler, and the rest of the team were a pleasure to work with and we can’t wait to do more with Red Frog Events! Anytime we ever speak with anyone at their company, they are always happy and full of excitement and energy. You can tell they all must love what they do! Here are some pics, and don’t forget to head on over to our Facebook to see them all!! P.S. I would definitely recommend signing up for this event! Check out their page to see if they’re in a city near you.

Getting To Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJs: DJ HOHME

By superadmin,

Getting to know your favorite FIT Radio DJs…

FIT Radio flew DJ HOHME down to Atlanta back in July to spin at one of the Top 3 Nightclubs in the Country, Opera Nightclub. We had such a good time and enjoyed his set so much we just had to bring him back! He’ll be back in “The A” this weekend and we couldn’t be more pumped!  HOHME has great energy behind the decks, and he really knows how to make sure everyone on the dance floor is having a good time. Read our  interview we did with him; it’s sure to get you all pumped and excited to jam out to HOHME whether it be on the web or your app, or if you’re in town, at Opera Nightclub!

Back in July I received the opportunity to chat with HOHME and ask him a few questions. Here is what he had to say…

Where is your favorite place to spin?  Anywhere people go specifically to let go and dance.  I’d say my recent favorites have to be my sets at Burning Man back in early September, a private beach party in Rincon, Puerto Rico in October as well as my set at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta back in July.

Where are you from?  Originally, I’m from Southern Oregon, but I went to school and lived in LA for nearly 7 years.  Also, I lived in Beijing for about 6 months.

Where do you live now? I’m currently based in NYC, specifically the East Village.

How did you come up with the idea for your iPad DJ MixBoard App?  I was looking for a way to make my DJ efforts as mobile as possible, and having to bring/rely on turntables/cdjs at every event was not something I wanted to do…so I took all the main features I use the turntable for and designed them into the interface of the app.  Now I can control basically everything I ever did with a turntable wirelessly on my iPad.

What was the hardest part about launching the iPad app?  The hard part was designing it in a way that included everything i needed (gain, effects, loops, cues, pitch control). Other than that, considering it’s based on open-source framework off an existing app, I didn’t really have to worry about launching it at all (which is why I ended up giving it out for free download).

Where is your favorite place in the world?  Oh man, that’s hard to answer… If I had to give just one, I’d say Katmandu, Nepal. I spent a little over a month backpacking through Nepal and India back in 2008. Describing the first time I saw the himalayas in person as breathtaking wouldn’t do it justice whatsoever.  It was straight up moving.  Not to mention, nepal is probably the furthest I’ve been from western culture, which was refreshing.

Where does your fashion inspiration come from?  I’ve always liked fashion, but never considered myself fashionable really.  I’d say my inspiration comes from close friends; a lot of my friends have serious style and mine, I’d say, is just a runoff from what I liked that they were wearing here and there. Currently I love basic, non-branded clothing with minimal but tactful details.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?  …depends what your definition of crazy is.  Most recently, I’d say Burning Man takes the ticket.  There’s no way to fully describe what it’s like on the playa, but it was the best/craziest week of my life…  just an insane time.

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?  I get to play the music I love for a living.

What is your favorite track at this moment in time?  I’m working on a bootleg of Morgan Page’s “Fight For You” right now with a producer partner of mine named Odmark, out of DC.  It’s sounding awesome!

What type of equipment do you use?  Macbook running Serato, Rane TTM 57sl mixer, and iPad…producing on Logic Pro

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?  Happy, blessed, positive

What is something no one knows about you?  I was a double major in business & dance in college.  I’ve danced my whole life.

What do you do when you aren’t spinning? Listen to a TON of new music, sleep.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?  Touring internationally, owning a record label, playing stadium crowds/festivals.

What are your thoughts on FIT Radio?  It’s the best, most user-friendly way to stream mixes on the app store.  Hands down.

Are you a fan of DJ HOHME? Be sure to follow him!

The Color Run: "Great Success! Very Nice!"

By superadmin,

FIT Radio was invited to provide music for the Finish Line at The Color Run this past weekend at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Since we all talked about how exciting it looked months before while we sat in the office, we were all thrilled to receive the opportunity to partner up with such a unique race. We brought out a team of Promo Girls with FIT Radio stencils and neon orange paint; as the girls ran around tagging people, they also got in on the action (see Abby, a FIT Radio promo girl, covered in paint to the left).

The Color Run was something none of us have ever seen before! It honestly was the Happiest 5K you could ever run! There were people playing around with colored powder everywhere, throwing it in the air, as they danced with their friends. The energy of the crowd was incredible! We may be a little biased, but we believe that it had something to do with our FIT Radio DJ Rimby who was providing non-stop, high-energy music throughout the entire event. All-in-all, it was a great day, and the most fun we have ever had promoting FIT Radio. Kudos to The Color Run for such a great idea!

Check out our Facebook to see more photos and videos! And be sure to LIKE our page and FOLLOW us on Twitter at @FITRADIO
