Getting to Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJs: DJ HOHME

Lexi Bellassai, Director of Operations

Getting to know your favorite FIT Radio DJs…

FIT Radio flew DJ HOHME down to Atlanta back in July to spin at one of the Top 3 Nightclubs in the Country, Opera Nightclub. Before his set,  we took him out to dinner for a little pre-gaming. During dinner and while he was down here, we all got to know him a bit. We were quickly blown away by how humble and courteous he was… must be those North Western roots! During his set, the FIT Radio Team and I partied in an Opera Box; We had a blast! HOHME has great energy behind the decks, and he really knows how to make sure everyone on the dance floor is having a good time.

I recently received the opportunity to chat with him and ask him a few questions. Here is what he had to say…

Where is your favorite place to spin?  Anywhere people go specifically to let go and dance.  I’d say my recent favorites have to be my sets at Burning Man back in early September, a private beach party in Rincon, Puerto Rico in October as well as my set at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta back in July.

Where are you from?  Originally, I’m from Southern Oregon, but I went to school and lived in LA for nearly 7 years.  Also, I lived in Beijing for about 6 months.

Where do you live now? I’m currently based in NYC, specifically the East Village.

How did you come up with the idea for your iPad DJ MixBoard App?  I was looking for a way to make my DJ efforts as mobile as possible, and having to bring/rely on turntables/cdjs at every event was not something I wanted to do…so I took all the main features I use the turntable for and designed them into the interface of the app.  Now I can control basically everything I ever did with a turntable wirelessly on my iPad.

What was the hardest part about launching the iPad app?  The hard part was designing it in a way that included everything i needed (gain, effects, loops, cues, pitch control). Other than that, considering it’s based on open-source framework off an existing app, I didn’t really have to worry about launching it at all (which is why I ended up giving it out for free download).

Where is your favorite place in the world?  Oh man, that’s hard to answer… If I had to give just one, I’d say Katmandu, Nepal. I spent a little over a month backpacking through Nepal and India back in 2008. Describing the first time I saw the himalayas in person as breathtaking wouldn’t do it justice whatsoever.  It was straight up moving.  Not to mention, nepal is probably the furthest I’ve been from western culture, which was refreshing.

Where does your fashion inspiration come from?  I’ve always liked fashion, but never considered myself fashionable really.  I’d say my inspiration comes from close friends; a lot of my friends have serious style and mine, I’d say, is just a runoff from what I liked that they were wearing here and there. Currently I love basic, non-branded clothing with minimal but tactful details.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?  …depends what your definition of crazy is.  Most recently, I’d say Burning Man takes the ticket.  There’s no way to fully describe what it’s like on the playa, but it was the best/craziest week of my life…  just an insane time.

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?  I get to play the music I love for a living.

What is your favorite track at this moment in time?  I’m working on a bootleg of Morgan Page’s “Fight For You” right now with a producer partner of mine named Odmark, out of DC.  It’s sounding awesome!

What type of equipment do you use?  Macbook running Serato, Rane TTM 57sl mixer, and iPad…producing on Logic Pro

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?  Happy, blessed, positive

What is something no one knows about you?  I was a double major in business & dance in college.  I’ve danced my whole life.

What do you do when you aren’t spinning? Listen to a TON of new music, sleep.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?  Touring internationally, owning a record label, playing stadium crowds/festivals.

What are your thoughts on FIT Radio?  It’s the best, most user-friendly way to stream mixes on the app store.  Hands down.
