We flew DJ Christyle down to Atlanta last month to spin at Opera Nightclub. Afterwards, we asked him a few questions…
Where are you from?
Federal Way, WA – a suburb 20 minutes south of Seattle. I currently live in Seattle where it doesn’t rain as much as you may think.
Current club residencies?
Lucky Strike & See Sound Lounge (Seattle), Harlot (San Francisco), Couture (Portland), The Fleetwood (San Diego)
What made you get into music and DJing?
I’ve been into music since I could remember. My first favorite song ever was “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. (I remember air guitaring on my bed to it when I was 9.) I would make mixtapes by recording songs off radio and also made my own personal music charts. Got interested in DJing in middle school with a friend, but got distracted with adolescent life – girls, sports, grades, popularity. In college, I started to play music at our house parties from my CD & Cassette Player since I had the biggest music collection out of all my friends. In 1999, I found an ad in the newspaper and literally emptied my personal savings account to buy a set of Technics turntables, a Pioneer 626 mixer and some random vinyl records from a guy who needed to pay his rent for the month. With a year of practice and a lot of scratched up records, I got my first gig at an end-of-year student association party. And I’ve been hooked ever since.
What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?
Seeing peoples reactions to the vibe I try to put out in every performance I give. When I see people having the time of their lives because of what I am playing is amazing to say the least.
What is your favorite track at this moment in time?
Nero – Reaching Out (Fred Falke Remix) – quoting my tweet from a couple weeks ago: “This song will be on repeat for the rest of my life”
Who are your favorite artists?
Hall & Oates, A Tribe Called Quest
What type of equipment do you use?
2 Technics Turntables, Rane 57 or Pioneer 800 mixer, 15in Macbook Pro, Allen & Heath Headphones and a Seattle Mariners Fitted Baseball Cap
What is your favorite movie?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – I even named a mixtape after one of the quotes – “So Choice”
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Coffee!
Where is your favorite place in the world?
My bed
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
A good person.
What do you do when you aren’t spinning?
Finding new music, editing music, rooting on my local professional sports teams, running and eating maple bars on Wednesdays.
What is one thing you’ve never done before, but plan on doing?
To play music for people on a different continent
What do you eat for breakfast?
Black Coffee is a must every morning. Maple Bars on Wednesdays. Oatmeal couple times a week. French Toast when I feel fancy.
What do you order at the bar?
Usually a Microbrew if there is a tap (Mac & Jack African Amber Ale is my favorite local brew)
